Black, Grey and White: Which SEO strategy to use?

SEO HATS

Before you invest your money and invest your trust in a certain SEO company Europe, you might as well know the kind of SEO practice they use. SEO has three different colours: black, grey and white. Each colour represents different SEO strategies.

  1. Black Hat

Black hat SEO concentrates on improving a website’s ranking by using unethical techniques and other practices that violate the rules and regulations of a certain search engine (e.g. Google). Black hat SEO uses the following techniques:

  • Hidden Text

It is a textual content that visitors cannot see but it is readable by search engines. This is used mainly to improve the website’s ranking within a short period of time.

  • Keyword Stuffing

This technique sees the SEO provider inserting an excessive amount of keywords into the meta- tags and the web content.

  • Scraping

A spam technique where an SEO provider plagiarises another website’s content and uses the content for their client’s website, it is basically a copy-paste technique. Scraping is also known as web data extraction.

  1. Grey Hat

Grey hat SEO is a combination of white hat and black hat SEO. It uses both legitimate and illegitimate SEO techniques. Here are some of the strategies that fall under Grey Hat SEO:

  • Buying Old Domains

Grey hat purchases old, abandoned domains (but with authority) and uses them to improve the rankings of a certain website. They do this by creating links that direct to the website that they want to rank.

  • Duplicate Content

This is a technique where a piece of content appears in two or more locations on the Internet.

  • Article Spinning

This technique involves re-writing existing content and simply changing some elements or parts of it to make the “new” content look unique and original. This way, they can avoid penalties for plagiarism. However, the content will still not be 100% SEO effective because it has the same “thought” behind it as the first hand reference.

  1. White Hat

White hat SEO practices ethical techniques and follows the guidelines and regulations of search engines. The advantage of using White Hat SEO is that there is no risk involved. This strategy involves guest blogging, link baiting, internal linking and other legal techniques. Some of them include:

  • Quality Content

White hat SEO provides original, relevant and reader-friendly information about the company, their products and services, etc.

  • Site Optimisation

This technique keeps the website’s structure and content in line with each other. The meta-data, web pages, articles, titles, etc. in the website are relevant and related to one another. Correct site optimisation plays a big role in a website’s search engine rankings.

  • Link Building

White hat SEO builds quality links by sourcing links from other websites and those links land back to the website that they want to rank.
